Anaerobic Digestion Feasibility Study

In 2019, funding was secured from Údarás na Gaeltachta, through the EU LECo project, and from Gas Networks Ireland to carry out a feasibility study, assessing the potential for anaerobic digestion to help meet our energy needs, both sustainably and affordably, and to provide a roadmap for the deployment of anaerobic digestion systems on the peninsula.

The study was undertaken by XD Sustainable Energy Consulting Ltd., with a team of experts in biogas systems design and engineering, advanced renewable energy systems and spatial planning. It began in May 2019 and the final report was published in June 2020.

The process of anaerobic digestion fits in with circular economy thinking where waste and resource use are minimised. Organic wastes, agricultural by-products and feedstocks become valuable resources when used to develop biofuel, whereby creating new economic opportunities for our local community.
